Diastema Dental Treatment

Diastema is a condition where there are more or disproportionate gaps between the teeth than there should be. The most common reason is that the teeth are smaller than the jaw. Gingival surgeries or anterior tooth loss may also cause the teeth to have gaps between.

Diastema causes various problems not only in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of health of the patient. Patients with diastema have a mouth structure that is more open for bacteria and plaque formation since there are gaps between the teeth that are not normal. In addition, speech disorders are frequently experienced due to the insertion of the tongue into these gaps.
Treatment of diastema is possible with different methods.

DIASTEMA TREATMENT METHODS
When determining the treatment to be preferred for diastema, i.e. gap between teeth, first the distance between the teeth is considered. There are 3 different treatment methods commonly applied by assessing the distance between teeth.

Composite Veneer (Composite Bonding)
It is a practical method used in cases where the gap between the teeth is minimal and in mild tooth abrasions and fractures. It is the process of enlarging the teeth that constitute the tooth gap by coating them with a composite material. Generally, the treatment is completed in a single session. Since it is more sensitive compared to other methods, it is necessary to protect the teeth applied composite veneer.

Porcelain Laminate (Leaf Porcelain)
It is a method used in mild and moderate tooth gaps and fractures. In this treatment application, the surface of the teeth is rasped sufficiently, laminates are prepared according to the size of the tooth and then glued to the tooth. Composite is more robust and permanent compared to veneer method. Treatment is completed in an average of 2-3 sessions.

Orthodontic Treatment
It is the preferred treatment method in cases of advanced teeth gap and closure disorder. It is performed by preserving the patient’s own natural teeth. The duration of treatment is longer compared to other methods, but it provides a permanent solution.
