Conservative Dental Treatment (Filling)
Filling is the restoration of the tooth with appropriate materials by performing the necessary cleaning to restore the existing loss of substance in our teeth damaged by caries.
What is Caries?
Formed by the bacteria in the mouth, the bacterial plaque create acid from bacterial plaque in our mouth. These acids cause damage to the enamel layer on the tooth over time,
and cause caries. Although the enamel layer is the hardest layer of our body, acids cause incredible damage to the general structure of our tooth enamel. Available bacteria can pierce the hard enamel layer slowly and over a long period of time, and thus worsen its condition. After the damage to the enamel layer, the caries, which integrates with the soft dentin layer, approaches the pulp, that is, the core part of the tooth. After a certain period of time, the teeth become sensitive to hot, cold and sugar. In some cases, caries can progress chronically stealthily without being noticed or causing pain. Your teeth may lose all vitality.
Which is Healthy Filling?
There are important details to consider when choosing the filling material to be applied to the tooth. Adapting to the existing tissue and long life is as important as aesthetic appearance. There are three filling materials used today.
Amalgam (Gray) Fillers
Amalgam fillings, which are known by everyone and are used since ancient times, have a history of 150 years. Its roots include mercury, silver and various metal alloys. We cannot say that grey fillings provide excellent protection. We encounter various secondary caries structures in the mouths of patients who have chosen Amalgam filling for years. Amalgam fillers also have disadvantages. Since gray fillings have a hard structure, they have trouble adapting to teeth during chewing. Micro cracks have been encountered in many cases.
Color also creates a disadvantage for patients. It has limited its aesthetic preferability due to its gray shade close to black.
Composite (White) Fillers
After rapidly progressing in line with the advances in dentistry, it has become the filling technique which developed within twenty years. In their early stages, these were considered less durable compared to Amalgam fillings. Today, developments in micro particle technologies have made composite fillers more durable. There are various reasons for choosing composite fillers. It is sufficient to clean only the caries part for insertion.
No additional material is required for filling attachment. It is another remarkable detail that they integrate with the tooth color in terms of aesthetic appearance. Adopting to the color of the tooth on which it is placed thanks to the “chameleon effect” in today’s technology made Composite filling even more attractive. This process provides great results in the anterior regions of the teeth thanks to its patient-oriented conveniences.
Porcelain Fillings - Partial Fillings
In various cases, it is possible to continue to use the original tooth prepared with porcelain in missing sites with a measurement process easier than crown veneer, for a tooth with substance loss that cannot allow fillings. Porcelain filling, which is preferred in caries directed to the lower parts of the gums or in caries that require nails to be inserted into the tooth structure, gives our patients peaceful smiles after two sessions. Porcelain fillings are prepared and polished in a laboratory environment. The porcelain details used in the treatment are highly resistant to pressures of 2-6 tons. There is no need to refill these areas afterwards.
What is Inlay-Onlay?
In caries treatment, metal or composites are used as fillings. In case of excess material loss, we prefer porcelain fillings due to their aesthetic appearance and durability. After the cleaning phase of the caries tissue, measurements are taken and the filling is prepared in the laboratory environment.
What are the Advantages of Inlay-Onlays?
It is highly preferable due to its aesthetic appearance. Their compatibility with the tooth is an extremely positive value.
